Artist's Statement
Art-making is, and always has been, at the core of my life. Art-making has sustained me during difficult times and enriched me during good times; to say it is essential for my spiritual well-being is an understatement.
Contrast in value, color and texture are the foundations of my drawings and paintings. My artwork generally starts with an inspirational idea or object and often evolves into a mixed media composition with the drawing itself as the focus. Graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and collage, including self-carved stamped images and pressed flowers, are among the media I use. I'm always on the lookout for new ways of composing a picture, but almost always my subject matter is representational -- although not always realistic.
Inspiration comes from many places - cameos in nature, like a leaf, or insect; ideas or emotions; historic events or concepts; or geographic phenomena. I want my viewers initially to be drawn into the beauty of the piece, and then contemplate a deeper meaning - or possibly just enjoy the composition and come away with a smile. Sometimes a viewer might leave with a better appreciation of the subject matter by virtue of simply concentrating on a single aspect, as I often emphasize.
